With holos, you're of course invested in your oshi, but most fans also have "side chicks" that they watch when your oshi is not streaming, or watch through clips.
All holofans at least know SOMETHING about almost every other talent.
This is not the case with niji or VCR.
They only have investment in the top 5-6. Because those have big numbers, so there's a feeling of "community" to watching them.
When a "big" holo encounters a "small" one (in terms of numbers) there's no artificial barrier or feeling that she's "blocking" something or "annoying" your oshi. Pekora and Bae interact naturally for example, and there's no bad blood from either side.
This is literally impossible with Niji/VCR servers where only the top few are viewed as "people" and the others are NPCs. The NPCs are always expected to do "set up" work for the "hero" like Kuzuha, Shaka etc.
The interactions between the "big guys" are almost always what gets clipped. Since they are entertaining, they get big numbers, which beget big numbers through the "communityfag" effect.
But what it means is that the smaller ones can NEVER build a story arc of their own. If they try (e.g. the guy that won Niji Mario Kart) they WILL be harassed by the "big guy"s audience, because the "plot" didn't go the way they wanted to.
Ultimately, everything is connected to story arcs.
