And the coral itself is the closest thing there is to terrestrial concepts of flora down there, which means the thousands of species suddenly no longer have environment to inhabit and either leave or go extinct outright.
The closest comparison to dry land would be wiping out a forest. All the bugs and reptiles and birds and mammals all flee and you get dry scrubland at best and desert at worst.
