I'm saying this as a Word Bearers legionnaire, btw.The problem here is that the Imperium started treating him like a God, which is literally what he advised against and why he punished the Word Bearers for doing so. The Emperor set them as an example for everyone to remember (by glassing their entire Homeworld. A bit overkill but whatever.)
As you can see in the current day of Warhammer 40K with all their religious iconography, none of them learned anything. Worse, it was the catalyst for why the corruption of Chaos seeped into the Imperium.
