Can't speak for other countries but in Germany you explicitly learn British English for some reason and even in elementary school it can be extremely confusing because the English you learn through osmosis is American.

The better question may be, since it's a difficult language to learn, is why every nation on Earth seems to have some grasp of English. They're learning it on their own without being asked to. En masse.

It makes sense, why wouldn't you learn the correct version of a language, especially as it is the language of two of your fellow European countries. Also 3 million German tourists visited Britain in 2023 versus 1.9 million German tourists who visited America.

Because despite English being all present in our daily lifes, most people do not have that much of a personal relation to the UK. The way it's taught might be "proper and correct", but it's annoying due to the personal disconnection. Admittedly, you could say this about any other language you have to learn in school as well, but in case of English, it is actually irritating due to the dissonance of information.

Youtubers usually develop a washed out variant of English in order to make it understandable by a broader audience, ESL soak it in because it's the biggest (more like the only) source for a listening practice. And there is more American and ESL content than British on the platform.
The result is a mixture of different accents, primarily American, that is also dumbed down to make communication easier.

Yes but, these days, Americans are re-writting history and are now claiming THEY are the speakers of the TRUE English (even more than the literal English people).
I remember reading it was some guy writing a dictionary for America who wanted to distinguish from American English and English English.

There are dialects of American English that are closer to the English spoken in 1700s Britain than the non-rhotic accent created by rich commoners in 1800s Britain who wanted to sound noble.
