Generations is just an anniversary title where Modern and Classic Sonic play through 2D/3D versions of their levels and defeat the Eggman/Robotnik and the Time Eater who caused the distortion
With the Shadow part, Black Doom somehow was able to manipulate the distortion (because he’s an alien warlord that can just do that I guess) in an attempt to take over Shadow’s body since both after making him stronger through unlocking his powers since their strengths (because of this game) are linked. Shadow resist his control yet again, but can’t change Maria and Gerald’s death cuz canon event plus the Sonic’s are currently using the Emeralds to defeat the Eggmans.

The lessen is we can save Elise but not Maria
