It's derivative of gen X, and their brand of 'being cool'. The difference is gen X was actually edgy in their comedy, they didn't care about offending. It's some 30+ year old douche, trying to sound hip. Not because he's old and trying to appeal to young people, because he fails miserably... he thinks in his head when he was 18 this was what cool guys talked like. And it reeks of fake confidence, and nihilistic irony, which is why everyone hates it.
