I think it becomes needlessly difficult if you try to half-ass it. Either give up or decide to do it for real. For me the strategy was doing a recon run, getting just over halfway through and making notes of the routes and the specific jumps that were tricky, wasting checkpoints in the process, then resetting and doing it all in one go, saving all my coins for the latter half.
