Because the gifted members are chosen randomly, then whatever the vtuber talks there is leaked. It really fucks over smaller corpos and indie chuubas. One ARS anti can pretty much stagnate your members growth if they gift 50 every time there's few gray names in chat.
Some started making lowest tier dirt cheap but only for emotes and 2nd tier be usual 5$ for member streams etc. since you can only gift lowest tier.

As an argie, I hope Youtube removes ARS and regional pricing for memberships and superchats like some other platforms did already. Sure, people will just move to turkish lira or some other currency, but at least that way I can gift a membership or get my messages read.

This is only my experience, but as a small vtuber this type of behaviour is pretty demoralizing and gives everyone in chat the impression that you're making bank, so people lose the motivation to donate. It also puts you in a very awkward place, even if you don't want to reward this type of behaviour, you can't just ignore the person since you have so little viewers.

the con of gifted membership specifically is that it's not any more stable than superchats. Gifts are one time deals and they expire in a month. They only become stable if someone is paying for their own membership. If most of your memberships are from a handful of whales doing mass gifts, it's not any more stable or predictable than superchat oilers.

people don't know when to strategically gift. if the stream is good and you see greys who have actively interacted it would be smart to send out a few gifts. When you do this for a few weeks you can eventually snag the type who will renew since they are already in it. It doesn't take much to continue it and the prestige / act of receiving a gift empowers a small community.

It's a barrier to entry so that only invested viewers can enter. The streamers talk about relatively controversial topics because it's considered a safe(r) space for them. Letting in random casual viewers defeats that purpose, though I think youtube is somewhat selective with how they distribute them.
