I've been going almost every year, even made it in Feb 2020 before the whole lockdown
At that time there were signs that they were straining under overtourism. Especially Kyoto where most apartments were being used for AirBnBs.
Pre 2019 you would be treated like a guest at your grandmother's house in Japan. Now there's way more places that give you the cold shoulder.
