Yes. A lot of eastern Europeans fled to the "Dutch East Indies" in the 1930s to avoid the unfortunate things happening in Europe at the time. Sadly, Japan didn't make their lives any easier in the 1940s. Some of the names have stuck around even after gaining independence.

Kovalskia is “Kovalski's (wife)”, Ledecka is “Ledecki's (wife)” etc
Marrying a woman here means she belongs to you or rather to your family.
