In the pre-facebook era, the internet was either kids on myspace or usually fairly apolitical/moderately political weirdos here or on SA or whatever. There was obviously some mainstream debate surrounding diversity in the television era, but it was much more telegraphed and controlled. The internet and social media in particular becoming mainstream has fucked everyone's head in extremely bizarre ways - with TV, you wanted understandable, passive audiences neatly organized into demographics that you can advertise to and control, with social media, you want extremely polarization as it drives up "engagement".
