If your most watched stream is your debut and you've been at it for say a year or two or more, are you considered a failure?

Depends on the size of the box you joined.
If you're a small guy in a big corpo, or you debuted during a time of major drama, it's not unreasonable.
Ideally you should strive to dwarf your debut, though.

Yes. a lot of cases. If anything, it's rarer for Holo/NijiEN to NOT have their debut as their biggest stream.
Hell, Gura's is still her debut by a large margin.

The only vtubers that tend to have any stream other then their debut be their most watched are ones who mainly do karaoke or ASMR. If you mainly do typical vtuber content then it's fairly common for people to go back and watch your debut as an introduction to your content and your interests.

Should've specified you meant CCV not overall views. Even then, it's going to be a lot harder for any vtuber these days to beat their debut CCV for anything other than very large collabs that they're the only POV for because the lockdown period is over and so people can't watch a run of the mill gaming stream that easily anymore but they still might make time for special events like debuts and graduations.

It's the opposite, having a stream that surpasses your debut means that you've achieved something truly great (especially if you're a post-2020 holo) unless it's some other kind of special event that always attracts tourists.
Personally I have never watched anyone's debut. I'm weak to vicarious embarrassment and seeing their nervousness makes me instantly close the tab.

For streams it's expected. But for videos you should really have a few that go beyond your debut. If your a small agency, hell even mid, your debut has around 50k, and that's not hard to pass vid a single good video or short.

The interest in vtubers in the west is not enough to propel those numbers, HoloEN does 50k with 3D lives, and Fuwamoco themselves reached 90k with their 3D reveal this year which is the biggest western stream of the year not including graduations (which again are from Holo). In other words, only Holo matters numbers wise in the West and only they can reach insane numbers with events and even more insane numbers with debuts and graduations, which means it's gonna be impossible for them to reach peak Holo debut numbers with events.

How would it even be possible to have a bigger stream than the debut stream without some out there viral shit? On youtube, people can continue to watch stream VODs for years and the debut stream is always gonna be there for people to watch.

My corpo oshi has been doing this for 3 1/2 years, her debut stream is her 22nd most viewed vod on her channel
In terms of live viewers, she had 500 or so for her debut stream so she has cleared that a hundreds of times now. I think her highest count for live viewers she has had on her stream is I think 3,500

Your oshi has done well for herself. Typically I would say if youre a small corpo and your debut is still in your top 5 most viewed streams, then that is pretty bad. That is the area of vtubing where you should be trying to pass your debut numbers and it is achievable. Good for her.
