Numbers stop mattering once a Vtuber is actually successful enough to make a good living and fund their personal projects. Beyond that point there’s only downsides to trying to rake in more numbers for the viewer.

i think it depends on you lot in the vtubing
if you are a holo, then numbers are the great separator.
for non-holos (or pre 2024 nijis), there are other metrics and milestones to measure making it because success is not guaranteed to them.

A big part of my enjoyment in vtubers is watching them start from nothing and then grow as that same character. When you find them at the ground level they interact with you by name, know you etc
When you watch them hit milestones like 100k, or 3d concerts, or watch them collab with their oshi or be able to go to a con and see people selling their merch or even to see someone make a cosplay of them...it's very fulfilling. because none of that is guaranteed.
You do not get that with holo chats that is a nameless faceless comment box, or where the vtuber is guaranteed success.
