It's not the key change itself that bugs me it's that it's set up strangely. As the verse ends they are building up a bunch of tension on the V chord and you'd usually expect that to resolve back to tonic but that's where it modulates and the next chord isn't even the tonic of that key (bVI I think which is bII of parent key).
I guess it's cool that it's surprising but from bach to jazz you would handle that very differently maybe in this case using secondary dominants ie V of bVI in the chorus key. I dno.
