They were all motivated by a desire to put an end to that world and that pain, even Naruto himself was ultimately driven by this. That was the obvious takeaway, that the only thing seperating Naruto from the villains in Naruto was Iruka's trauma and hatred of the Kyuubi being less important than his love for and duty to his pupil.
