a friend was complaining that people think its weird to like vtubers and think about them romantically. I told him it was no big deal since they're just characters being played by actors.
he got upset with me and started making passive aggressive comments about how they're not actors and the vtubers aren't characters and only fake fans think the vtubers are acting and not being 100% authentic...

what do you think?

They're playing characters at the end of the day, and people get really attached to characters
The line just feels blurred because there IS a real person behind the anime avatar and while there's some degree of acting and being in character, they usually go on about stuff that goes in their real life (within reason of course)
As a result, you get something that's both fictional (the character, the performance) but also real (the stories, the personality)
So they are actors and they play characters, and maybe it's weird to like 'em or think about 'em romantically but as long as you're not completely sabotaging yourself or others, is it really so bad?

I think there's no such thing as acting. Most of your personality is just a role you put on to please your parents, friend, or community growing up. In adulthood you pick up roles in jobs and with colleagues. I can't remember the last time I made a single sincere post on 4chan that wasn't molded by the posts I've read the responses I expect. There is no real you at all, you're just a combination of fake "you." Vtubers are no different than actors or wrestlers that assume different personalities to please others, and in doing lose themselves to the selves they create. It's all just more layers to the onion that is identity.

Yes and no.
Yes, they are technically actors who are playing a character. To think that the way they act on stream is 100% them is retarded.
However, it's also wrong to say that they are regular actors. The amount they stream alone makes it impossible for them to not let their real personalities seep into their characters.
Furthermore, they are not following a script so we are watching their stream of consciousness, which makes it even harder for them to not let their real personalities shine through.

So yeah they are actors, but a lot of the time they nevertheless just say things they really do believe and really do care about.

Just like regular vloggers, or similar to fancier singer-songwriters, they're both the actor and the director. Characters they play is an artistic expression no different from an anime girl, but the vision is their own, so it's a bit closer to just talking to the guy.
Of course it's also mostly livestreams with chat so you're quite literally just talking to the dude and the real personality will seep over into the character eventually.

All streamers are acting to some extent, the thing that makes Vtubers interesting is that it is a more extreme version of that. In one sense they are much more just actors playing a role with much more freedom to fabricate things but at the same time the freedom to effectively separate the character from their real selves allows them to be, on occasion, more genuine then they might be if they were speaking as 'themselves' (much like the this shithole does with everyone being pseudo-anonymous).
How much one individual is one way or another can vary and we could argue all day about who is being genuine when and who is in character when (Even in the case of those with their roommates exposed if they, for example, show vulnerability while in character they always have the out of saying that it was the character not them so I still feel like this still applies).

At the end of the day it is irrelevant as long as you make sure not to forget that this is all just entertainment and not to get too emotionally invested.

I wouldn't say "actor" is the right term, but they're obviously putting on an act in some regards.
I'm certain if you were to meet one of the big Vtubers on the street they would be pretty similar to their online persona, but there would be quirks that are new to you.

Anyone who says this doesn't know anything about being on stage or on camera. Acting in a production requires weeks worth of practice for a competent performance and months worth of practice for an excellent performance, even if all of the people involved are professionals. What's more, in the case of movies, any given scene is the result of multiple, possibly even dozens of takes. It is a situation in no way comparable to a youtuber or vtuber turning on a stream and doing shit live for hours nearly every day. Rather than a good actor, the person you want as a youtuber or vtuber is someone who is already weird enough that they don't need to act at all in order to be interesting.
