I stand before the Library Council. It's a round table of robed men in glasses. They chatter amongst themselves. I look at the ghoulish man who represents my lawyer at this time. He tells me the arbiter is late. Suddenly an armored man arrives wearing a bearded roman mask. A young woman trips and falls. She scatters papers everywhere. A young lad helps her pick up the papers and her glasses. I stand quietly.
After the ghoulish man argues my case. The council asks me many questions. I have no control where the shuttle landed. I explain my reasons why I was exiled from my space station. I cannot tell them the name of the station nor even my own name as my memory has been destroyed. So I'll never find my way back. Yes I am willing to forfeit the station and all technology on it on exchange for my life. I understand my freedom will not be guaranteed. As the council argues among themselves the arbiter has fallen asleep. Her assistant, the lad, shakes her awake. He whispers to her. The arbiter folds her arms. She shouts "be quiet! I'm thinking!" The council remains quiet. "Yes... I think you're being a little harsh on yourself. You were aware of the risk and you have taken responsibility for the damage. But you were not in control of the capsule that landed in Library Grounds. I cannot fault you for that." One of the councilmen objects. "I am the arbiter, councilman. I am casting my judgement." He says "yes your honor," and takes a seat. The arbiter looks at me and adjusts her thick glasses. "You are forbidden to leave this island for life as we cannot risk your knowledge of deep space technology unbalancing the world. However you are free to live here so long as you are willing to contribute to the island's development. Also I will personally take charge of your capsule and supplies. I am also the Library's keeper. So your technology will be archived. And I will ask for your knowledge from time to time. Which that knowledge will only be between us. Understood?" I nod and say yes. "My judgement has been cast. Bring the shackles."
The intimidating armored man brings me shackles but with no chains. The arbiter speaks, "These shackles are magic. They are weightless when youvwear them. But if you attempt to flee the island they will weigh you down like a thousand stones." The man puts the shackles on. "Now, I will see you in my personal office. My arbitration has been cast. You all are dismissed."
