Unfortunately the Hirai face/body problem extends before and after SEED. Infinite Ryvius, Fafner, Majestic Prince, Heroic Age, Gin'iro no Olynssis, and Linebarrels of Iron all see this issue.
What makes it strange is that it's almost an instant swap from his work in the 90s up till 2001's Scryed; to then go to the simplified swaps in Gundam SEED in 2002.
I don't hate Hirai's designs though. Like I said, everyone is pretty memorable through coloration, minor design elements, and alt-costume styling. If I had to guess, I think his time spent as an animation director influenced his character styling so that they would be easy to animate and keep on model at all times.
>>93851877It's more like, it has a bunch of ex-Gainax people working on it. The main leads on this project are almost 1:1 for FLCL from back in the day. They just happened to work on Eva as well, but not all of them in lead positions.
Feb 29th the movie is going to release in the US, so I'm definitely getting tickets for that.
