the simplest comparison is that vtubers are still at the stage of anime pre-AoT in the west. post-AoT, anime has been mainstream enough that overseas revenue outpaced Japan.
vtubing needs one big mainstream hit to really take off in the west. Gura was a good start, but it needs something even bigger.
