Serious question, how do so many vtubers sound cute? It's not the modulators, even girls with regular voices and the occasional male desu have this naturally appealing tone that you don't really hear outside of vtubing.

It's all in the voice projection. Many tend to raise their pitch to specifically sound cuter, and some even do it subconsciously, especially if they're nervous or starting out.

This also ends up hurting the voice if they're not prepared or trained. Suisei and Festival iirc are examples of people who had to drop their voice pitch because it was actually hurting their throat to do it so much.

You’re only hearing the successful ones. The ones with ugly voices don’t last long and don’t achieve much success if they stay.

It's kind of a shame, I saw a cool vtuber a while back. She had a great model, and made great content, and she even had a cool voice. But it was one of those "cool" sort of voices, like a cool tough girl, and it really didn't fit her cute model. I don't think she ever found any success.

Some vtubers don't understand that it's absolutely vital to have your voice match the aura of the model. If it sounds mismatched, it's going to turn people off. No matter how much she wanted to be a cute princess vtuber or whatever, she needed to lean into the cool voice with a matching cool design and cater to that specific audience.
