On the one hand, this isn't the song to get upset over. Conversely, that is a weird phenomenon that's not that hard to find elsewhere. Why are English-oriented talents not subtitling the songs that are not in English?If I were in their shoes, it would be unconscionable for me to release a foreign language cover and not provide an English translation in the subtitles as the bare minimum. You don't even have to put it in the video, just use the YouTube tool or provide a translation in the comments or something.

This lack is why I don't listen to music unless I know it's English or a language close enough to it (aka Romance or other Germanic languages) that I could roughly follow along.

I've had this issue since myth. I get that translations for cover songs are another set of perms to get on top of the song itself so nine times out of ten they just opt not to, but it's so frustrating considering how many JP covers we get dropped on us.

With how stupid the Japanese record companies are with cover perms, it might not simply be only "translations are another set of perms," but also "cover perms explicitly prohibit translations, official or otherwise"
Which would mean that Cover is not legally allowed to post or allow to be posted a message explaining that "tomodachi" means "friend(s)" in the YT comments section

I could believe that too, and considering some of the strange peculiarities they've run into in the past with certain stream perms I wouldn't be all that surprised. One of the weirder ones I remember was Capcom letting them stream all their games but only in Japanese for some bizarre fucking reason.

It is hard to get English songs due to permissions. Thus, it would be far more expensive for even some mediocre songs, and far too much for the good ones people listen too. There is a reason English songs are only in unarchived karaoke (as well as the Youtube Copyright system being annoying with Content ID)

English songs you need to pay larger amounts for EN songs, is on a single case and case-by-case basis, and would need to get perms period, instead of perms for moral reasons. I feel like most English publishers wouldn't want an anime girl singing one of there songs.

I obviously don't know the Behind the Scenes, but
1. Nerissa and Mori translated the lyrics, I don't know if they would do it again
2. It might have been a case by case basis as it takes a lot of time, and could have been only for those covers.
4. The song has, arguably, silly lyrics, so they might be fine/planned it so the EN listeners only here the funny sounds and cool MV.

It's not hard. If all you're doing is a cover song, then a compulsory mechanical license the copyright holders have to sell you is very cheap. Streaming platforms even handle this for you, so record your cover and upload it to Spotify and you're good. Youtube is a video platform though so you also need a sync license and those rates aren't set. The prices can get into the hundreds of dollars, but the process isn't actually difficult once you've done it before, especially for popular songs or songs that have a company behind them.

I work translating TV series for subtitling and let me tell you, nothing is more autistic than song rights. I can probably count on two hands the number of times we've been able to translate them. Most of the time we just transcribe them or completely ignore them. This happens to us even in situations that seem completely incomprehensible, such as when dealing with a client that supposedly is the sole owner of those songs. I imagine it must be the same for corpo chuubas.
