Anon, do you think movies and songs are only watched/listened to on the year that they come out and then never again? Macross is a popular franchise that began 40 years ago and keeps popping up from time to time. Younger people probably know the songs.
That aside Fuwamoco clearly do seem to have a preference for older Japanese media and work it into their content as much as possible.

Kinda. They're at a weird spot where their references and media are not only Japanese but from the mid-00s at most, skewing hard toward the early 90s. As a zoom-zoom, it's fun to learn about a bunch of media I've never seen through their streams.
