Even though swords do higher DPS, most enemies have 10 HP. If you slap a sharpness enchantment on a stone or steel axe, you can drop them in 1 hit.
Plus, it'll be easier to repair than a diamond sword, it saves inventory space, and you don't even need to switch tools when fighting off enemies while gathering wood.
