The normal default American newscaster accent has been the Midland accent (aka the "Nebraska" accent), which was apparently chosen because Americans don't think it sounded like anywhere in particular. Today, the "General American" accent is either Midland or Western, which are pretty similar (the easiest way for normies to tell them apart is that Western accents have the cot-caught merger).
