I'll show you my cow farm and my biggest problem is to resist the urge to multiply them so I can keep cow population low enough
Just flatten some four chunks (or build it up in the sky as I did), put dirt blocks with one grass so they can spread (for style), some illumination to avoid monsters and put cows and chickens there.
I also planted trees so I can chop them when I need wood.
Automating it all will suck the fun of the game for you, trust me, been there done that.
