I see a lot of replies to this post and I read none of them, but I imagine it's filled with vitriol.
Meanwhile people who actually work a lot (either through actual work or schooling) just completely forget the actual day a holiday falls on. They see it as "upcoming" until it either happens or nearly happens and something jolts their perception of the holiday into the immediate hour.
It happened to me this year and last with multiple holidays because I had to cover for some of my coworkers who quit, leaving a pile of unfinished work.
