Of course people heard about 4chan before, but most normalfags maybe checked the site once out of morbid curiosity the vast majority didn't stay
Nowadays it's much less "scary" and there are 15 years of screenshots and stuff going around for every new kid using internet to discover, twitter accounts compile "best of" etc etc., /vt/ is affected to a point I can tell how the vocabularity is so different than most other boards and every new twitterspeak or related get unironically used here before anywhere else on 4chan
