That said, the reason why his ideas got popular was because atheism was in vogue in the 19th century. There was a genersl declibe in faith, and Schopenhauer pointed out that there wasn't really a point to anything (nihilism). While Nietzsche agreed on nihilism, he disagreed with Schopenhauer on adopting an ascetic life. He instead suggested that we should live life to the fullest. He came up with the eternal returns as a metaphor for there being only one life, and we should live it as best we can
