Saw some clips of Korone on tumblr, which lead to me investigating and getting into hololive. The main appeal for me aside from the fact that they were living anime girls was seeing the cultural exchange as they tried interacting with EN fans.
I was primarily a clip watcher at first because language barrier+I was unused to the livestream format+limited freetime. However, I was a big ASMR fan, so I was able to get familiar with Fauna through that and she eventually became my Oshi. At that point, I felt comfortable enough to invest time and attention into watching her streams, so now I'm used to consuming the livestream format.
Tbh, I think it's mostly hololive that keeps me in the vtuber sphere, not because I have anything against other agencies, but because of the sense of familiarity it provides. I'm already familiar with the talents, and even when a new gen debuts, the relation with the existing talents helps to gradually introduce the new ones to me. Also kind of helps that it's a safe bet that anyone who's a vtuber is a weeb, but also that anyone who manages to get into hololive necessarily has to be a friendly person. It makes for an environment where I feel in good company wrt my interests, but also not "rough around the edges" the way I sometimes see weeb spaces be like. Basically, I feel like I'm with "my people", and I don't have to worry about the environment becoming hostile.
If somehow all of hololive and any ex-holos were to disappear, honestly I probably would disengage from vtubers. The only other vtubers whose content I follow are ASMRtists. I've always loved the concept of vtubers, but I think I'm past the point of seeking them out for being vtubers specifically.
