It's present at birth, but only begins to manifest in early childhood, when certain brain development milestones are supposed to happen. Autism isn't treatable - there are no meds and there is no cure.
What can happen later in life is that an autist can find an environment that allows autistic behavior - and become "more autistic". Or learn better masking skills and become "less autistic".
The autism itself doesn't change - the behavior people see does.
