to a lot of people that arent used to it, the flavor is unpleasant
also consider that hersheys has been around since the 1800s and their recipe is probably the result of some necessity due to rationing during a depression or world war and their major consumers of pure chocolate are older folks who expect that taste
dont know if the syrup follows the same formula though
also worth mentioning is that this is specifically for the hershey company. there are other US chocolate companies that dont do this and imported chocolates are readily available in most stores
where i live its rare to NOT see brands like Lindt, Ferrero, Milka, Cadbury, Godiva next to our chocolates
