Japan doesn't view demons as inherently evil. They see them more as a position than a character trait that's evil. Dark elves are seen as tainted by their evil deeds of themselves or their ancestors rather than having a race that is supposed to do evil. Kinda like how being an assassin isn't seen as immoral but a random guy that murders someone on the street is bad.
