Gamestop didn't get saved because of the sudden "numbers",but rather the sudden "numbers" happened due to the company saving itself. There are thousands of companies being short selled all the time, yet this happened specifically to Gamestopfor very specific reasons. The whole plan to fuck with the shorts originated after a pretty deep study made by some guy on the restructuring of the company, using insider info on how the new leadership would be benefitial in a few months. This convinced quite a few people to invest with the security of the big guys short selling still. The moment GME suffered a light, expected incline, and the short selling spiked, was when the whole GME debacle happened in full force.
The company was already saved by that point.
