I tried many times to learn Japanese and to get to a level where you can actually hold conversations beyond very simple things takes a very long time and a lot of consistency. Japanese is one of the hardest languages to learn in the world especially for English speakers. I'm pretty convinced the only way to learn it in adulthood is full immersion like moving to Japan or studying it full time. Nobody just learns japanese on the side. That's why the holoen cast are actually insanely talented as is with two or three members that have decent Japanese.
