JP Gen 0 and Gen 1 had normal jobs for years, and they often say that they wouldn't want to go there ever again. Is it because their jobs were exploitative and evil? Perhaps, it's Japan. But mostly because the sense of community, of belonging, and obviously the massive earnings, could not be achieved if they had done half-and-half. Forming connections and friendships and big audiences of fans that love you and adore cannot really be done while doing half and half. Mori tried to do half and half and at the end she decided to just...pursue Hololive full time, because why wouldn't you? You're not only getting paid well but you're getting treated well.
The other is even simpler. Indies don't join Holo because they CAN'T. Mint tried, Bao tried, Shylily tried, Enna...may have tried (I don't know, it's only a rumour), and failed. And those are the best known cases. Shiori is a bitch and a whore and yadda yadda yadda but she had 5 years of experience in the industry before joining Holo. You're assuming that Indies don't join Holo because they're comfortable just the way they are, but if they would, other companies like Niji and VShojo would be empty.
Not a single Indie would deny a Holo invitation, if you heard the case of someone doing so (like Grimmi claims that happened), they're just lying to you, and it's best that you treat it as such as to not make false illusions of indie grandeur.
