This thread is mostly for me to improve and get better (git gud at it) :3
I started around 4 months ago Vtubing, post clips on YouTube+ long form, stream daily on twitch for a few hours, got affiliate pretty quick +- 40k views on yt but I'm stagnating a bit.. I feel like I can do more.

Like might be missing something, what makes you stay and watch smaller Vtubers? <15 average, or mostly you just watch bigger ones
I do feel there is an appeal in the connection you have if the chat is not moving so fast, but would love to know what makes you stay your fav content creators!

It'd suggest watching some early streams of vtubers that started really small.
Like Pippa or Tomoe Umari. Both grew really fast. They are pretty different in vibes and what they're known for.

the short answer is that the both have a decent number of moments where it feels like you're interacting with an actual person rather than an "online personality" and with a small chat the interaction feels like a two way thing. That's what creates the parasocial thing.

Pippa recently did the thing where you set subscriber only mode to 3 years and still had a decently quick chat. In spite of her core audience being dwarfed by new people the core is still there.

The thing that makes me stay no matter the size is that there is a connection, something to relate to, if there is any hobby you really like specifically talk about it often like cooking, games, anime. Anything doesn't matter what it is (hopefully not politics). Also try to be relatable to the kind of people you want to bring.

Yeah, if you have some kind of topic or activity that you can sperg out about non-stop, that's a good way to find a niche.
There's a few vtubers into programming, they're rare, but if you watch the chat, they found their audience lol
You're kind of better off hitting some mostly untouched niche rather than trying to copy what big vtubers are doing.

The chances of my chat messages affecting the stream, so basically how you interact with chat is the appeal for people who like to watch smaller vtubers. You've already pretty much made it more than the majority of VTubers if you hit affiliate on twitch with around 40k views on YouTube. The question is what you want to do, I guess. Try to show your appeal through your clips, like is your bantering fun? Do you have an interesting train of thought? Are you good at singing? You should always focus on showing the things you're good at because that's what gonna reel people in. Try out new things, like handcams if you're personally okay with it.
I also heard that Twitch has channel points stuff so you could make the redeems more fun by letting the audience hit you with bananas or whatever.

There's a smallish JP (bilingual) vtuber called Uehasu. Her chatting streams are chill and she just goes with the flow of things. She often spawns in things that chat mentions, like rocket launchers. Or putting herself in a big bowl of curry. Basically if chat mentions some idea that seems funny she'll try to do it.

Pikamee was pretty good with what she did. Basically a wholesome bilingual weirdo. Also Gyari's art was amazing (I still miss monoe) Voms could be amazing if gyari gave a bit more of a shit.

I think a lot of people don't consider the audience, and just do what seems easy, and hopping on the superficial "i do vtuber things" which means playing fotm horror slop and pretending to be scared in between endless minecraft grinding or react sloppa.
The male vtubers emulating what works for the girls, while in a gay anime villain avatar are repulsive. The ones that do the things that guys are good at, like speaking with authority and providing interesting info, creating interesting things are good. Like old pizza dad streams, back when he'd have chill educational stuff, not the zoomer dj garbage he became.
Girls can do that too, like I watched Clio's vod on the troubles, guys are better at it though. Girls on the other hand have a lower bar to entertain me. They're cute, and I can enjoy them being cute without having to deal with their menhera up close.

I /only/ watch female VTubers these days. When I tried out male VTubers I was often creeped out by how often they try to "rizz" or woo their audience. I know it's weird but I don't want my ears to be randomly assaulted just because a thirsty fan asked for a kiss in an akasupa. At least the male fans for the female vtubers seem to know their limits, female fans have zero restraint, man.

nah, I mean it just got me thinking about the societal factors that created such dynamics, and how that manifests with vtubers basically turning it into a product. I can see the post in my head but if I typed it out it'd be a schizo wall of text that nobody wants. I've probably said enough that you get what I mean anyway

It's part cultural problem (they make a lot of gaybait jokes and constant cum/dick references) but it's also just visually unpleasant. Take Ruze for example, the classic brotuber (according to holostars fans). His model is horrendous for a guy (do girls like this shit?). The bare chest, the weird fucking hair, the weird face. I'd never stare at this for hours.
The only exception I ever made to this was, of course, stereotypically, the Magni and Vesper debut era, those first few weeks before they started spamming Hololive collabs. But they second they became collab beggars, it ruined my opinion of them, they came off as desperate and the brotuber vibe was totally lost. I wanted to see them try to succeed on their own but it revealed that they were actually just desperate to be involved with Hololive all along.

Ruze isn't that bad of a design beyond being cluttered. It's not amazing, but if I just saw it, and never heard him talk he'd irritate me less. Most of the guys they get for holostars aren't actually people I'd want to watch do anything regardless of the design. I don't get it, I'm probably not the demographic.
Most of the male vtuber designs are like "take some fetish shit you'd see at a gay pride parade, make it gayer, then....uhh, add mech arms or something I guess" Again, I'm clearly not the demographic.

The could aim for something like Dethklok, just get some young metal band and give them anime avatars that fit, they could go over the top with it and it'd be fine.
Or make some other broadly appealing content. Like poach nilered, get Huke to do a mad scientist outfit for him, and maybe find a way to do his stuff the way azumalim does.
