In the case of Liu Ma's parents (no that's not her real name, but since learning she's Chinese, that's how I default refer to her in my headspace), English and Russian make sense even if languages had nothing to do with what their actual fields are.

Lumi being the child of Chinese academics instead of Russian ANYTHING would explain why she was able to do a bunch of music and other extracurriculars in her childhood despite very clearly coming from a working class background outside of one of the country's biggest cities.

Poorer Asians just put their kids into TOO many things that would seem useful on college apps but in reality are not. Which is why you see more Asian kids with less-than-perfect grades but a focus on one relatively oddball thing compared to other Asians getting into the top schools Lumi's fans THINK she went to, versus the kids like Lumi who I assume had like six or seven prestigious extracurriculars and a 4.0 unweighted.
