Hindsight is always 20/20, and if it's someone you really care about you always want to think well for them and hope they'd change for the better. Like it'd be weirder if they were real friends and immediately they'd cut someone off.
From personal experience it us a whole year to cut off a friend that was genuinely gone off the deep end from our friend group while every time he showed himself up it lead to disaster. Much like this situation, a crisis had to happen before we took action.
