They made deals so that cheap shit from China would not get taxed, so it LITERALLY cost more to ship something within US than from China to US. Chinese factories would steal any domestic thing that was a good idea, breaking all laws of patents and IP, to just flood the market with a copy of the product and ship to IS customers cheaper than domestic sellers.
It was literally self imposed degradation which is finally getting reversed now.
