Why don't more vtubers try to gear themselves specifically towards short form content (skits, let's plays, short form commentary/rants) over long-form streams? Clips and Shorts exist but those are either supplemental or derive from streams
Think Oneyplays, Markiplier, GradeAUnderA, and Picrel

Realistically how much time and money does it take to make say, 4 to 7 minute videos, or like a set of 2 to 3 minute shitposts?
I was able to crank out like 5 shitposts in about half a days worth of work and got a couple thousand on a few, back in my time of dabbling with content creation, and there's a pretty viable market for commentary videos to put on as background noise, made a couple of those before too, like a day's worth of work at most

Are you sure about that? The top hololive vtuber only does shorts as her main content

Well for starters commissioning an entire vtuber avatar would be wasted money for once a month content. Also people move on way to fast for that kind of content and the slow burn time to make and release.

You'd probably end up spending more cash making stuff and just have the slow burn be a money pit

I got into vtubing because of short form content with Kizuna. Absolutely loved her neverending nightmare playthrough. It was exactly what YouTubers had done for years except with a woman behind an anime girl avatar. I wish more chuubas did this form of content rather than stream. Clipperfags will have nothing to clip and you don't need to give up hours of your day just to watch the chuuba. I'd immediately watch a chuuba who does videos like that instead of streams. I know Cookie does this, but last I checked she caters towards children.

The problem with content like Kizuna Ai is that, Ai had a whole team behind her. It wasn't just her. She had 3D modelers, she had a mocap studio, she had script writers, she had editors, she had producers.
That level of content quality is hard for a random indie to acheive

Parasocials are stronger when the reaction is live. Like a few threads recently where some fans seemed to cream themselves because they got a retweet from their oshi. Except when it's live it's like having multiple orgasms for some people, and they're addicted to it. Then they pay more.
The only downside is that the actual content is garbage. The same people will complain about paying for games or pirate movies, content which is consistently usually much higher quality than any live stream in existence. If they could make games and movies more parasocial like live streams they would.

It could be because finding an audience who enjoys long form content would also mean they might be adverse to using short form formats to begin with. Being discovered through shorts could be a good top of funnel I guess though to find new viewers.

It's funny that you count let's plays as short form content when they are the original long form low-effort cancer that overtook YouTube in the early 2010s. I remember all gaming channels that I had watched slowly pivoting from edited gameplay highlights to these long uneventful letsplays. The reason for that back then was the same as it is now - editing and quality control require time and effort while any idiot can record himself playing a game and yapping for several hours. Creating high-effort content on YT is just not economicallly profitable in the long run unless you rely on Patreon. Also, I suppose vtubers specifically benefit from parasocial aspects of streaming, so there's that as well.

Shorts, edited YT videos and streams are basically independent mediums. They feed into each other (shorts are cut out of videos and streams and serve to advertise them, videos are edited from streams, streamers react to shorts and videos), but they have different audiences. Thing is, if you're already streaming, you can just hire an editor to cut down streams into YT videos and shorts and get some extra money. And, vice versa, if you are doing YT videos, you can as well stream yourself getting footage for them. From a purely economic standpoint, for most people there's no reason not to do all three - shorts, videos and streams. But then again, we live in a world where most streamers can't be even bothered to set up multicast between Twitch and YT. People are just lazy in general.
