Your cleanup looks great! In cases where there's either upscaling or compression artifacts creating noticeable color shifts instead of being a soft gradient, you can mark off the general area (selection/magic wand/etc) and sample the edge colors for that area, then put a gradient there on a new layer. Even if it's not you introducing a gradient fuck-up, it's always a nice thing to fix.
