The usual way to eliminate banding is to add random noise. That breaks things up. I did that, but had to keep the opacity very low so the 'grain' wasn't obvious. I think that helped -- but not enough.
Then I gave it a couple shots of Gaussian Blur (smearing pixels around) and Selective Gaussian Blur (averaging the colors of neighboring pixels which aren't too different in the first place.) both in small amounts.
You'll have to decide if this represents an improvement.
