One thing I want to mention though is that don't assume you have to gmesh everything. You can easily mix gmesh and hard shadows. So for instance, the shadows for the grenade on the lips that you were mentioning looked difficult to gmesh are simply just hard shadows in the original that you can draw with a fill. That is the same with that major hair shadow to the right. Just looking at the original, there are countless other areas in the hair and clothes where you can take advantage of the fact that they are hard shadows. You can take the time to make individual shapes and extend the amount of time working on something to make it all gmesh, but in the end, it may look worse, or not significant enough to have wasted all that time.
Take a look at the eyes for instance. I attempted doing it as all gmesh but found it lackluster. However, by adding the hard line for the pupil, I was able to add definition to the eye. To me, the hard shadows help keep focus on the areas of the image, while the gmesh adds that nice blend of color.
