As an anime fan, I'm used to having character development shoved in my face (it's poor writing, but it's so prevalent I'm more used to it than I should be). But as soon as I opened a critical eye towards the Madoka-centered scenes (her admiration of Mami, her conversations with her parents, her struggles with Sayaka's situation, and her interactions with Homura and Kyouko), I began to see a lot more in the show.
