I selected the blue haze and the ground with the wand, then feathered the selection outwards (distance a matter of judgment. You may disagree with my choice.) and copied (not cut) them to another layer. Call that layer A.
Now I could select the kitsune alone and feather inwardly to eliminate any white halo of pixels. Copied to layer B.
I filled the background layer (which still contained everything) solid red and checked for imperfections.
Merged layers A and B together and deleted the background.
Path tool not required in this case -- though you should learn how to use it.
