I don't think you'd have problems fitting in, but forcing your way into a new community hardly ever works, so it's not surprising why people seem to be so upset either. It's literally a culture clash.
/g/ shit posts a lot, but people really do like it when you have a pretty desktop. If you make your desktop look nice, people will ask you for your wallpaper, or your configs, etc. Eventually you'll just become another regular like the rest of us.
