I'd personally keep the widget fully opaque rather than slightly transparent, and keep transparencies consistent across the board (i.e. don't just keep some things opaque but make others transparent without a scheme that ties it together). Otherwise, a background does look better, but I'd search for one that's more evenly contrasted (if that makes sense?).
As for my rice, just for a quick explanation: I have a script set up to change the wallpaper to a Splatoon one when there's a map rotation I want to play (which I disabled and set to toggle between the Splatoon and non-Splatoon one for the purposes of this webm). Otherwise, it toggles between anime/Splatoon and a non-anime one when I'm out of my wifi's range.
