I'm not too good with gimp, I use photoshop more.
To add the shadow in gimp make sure your banner layer is the current active one. Some where under the filters under light and shadow you will see drop shadow. Just play with the direction and make it point either up or down so its above or below the banner. I would start with above so the shadow matches the shadow from the nav bar.
