Certainly not the most intelligent, or the deepest. Im not saying its perfect. Its not even my favourite (a little known manga called Majin Tantei Nougami Neuro holds that honour).
But the combination of goofy characters, imaginative locations and truly epic scale dwarf all others for me. Its about adventure. Each island a new one. And i find no other series can i think back and take in the scope of how far theyve come since they started out. As in i can almost imagine an enourmous line leading backwards, going through each island and location until finally it ends up where Luffy began.
It must be remembered however its been going on for well more than a decade now, and has matured with its readership. Early chapters were far far more childish/goofy, and later chapters still are but introduce concepts like rebellion against a corrupted government, slavery and an unambiguously evil upper class controlling others through right of blood at the same time.
