I did a similar thing with it but ultimately didn't like how it turned out. Even high res sky pictures tend to look overly blocky around stars and trying to get the new sky to blend in with the painted look of the image just wasn't working. Even with filters and stuff it just looked cut and pasted and where the water meets the sky was an awkward mess. From a normal viewing size and distance it looked alright but once I blew it up to take 3 screens it really showed its flaws. I'll give yours a shot though this weekend and see if it helps.
